BUDMA: Construction 5.0. A New Perspective

Share

The theme of the BUDMA 2027 International Construction and Architecture Fair is the synergy of digital technology, sustainable development and human needs. The upcoming edition will reflect a model of development in the construction industry aimed at creating intelligent, safe and resilient spaces.

Digitalisation

The pillars of Construction 5.0 are digitalisation, sustainable development, a human-centred approach, resilience and safety, and prefabrication. BUDMA 2027 will build both its exhibition and its substantive programme around these very themes.

Digitalisation is a tool without which we can no longer imagine today’s reality. The construction industry also benefits from achievements such as BIM (Building Information Modeling), artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. Modern companies in the construction sector are constantly optimising their processes through automation and robotisation. They also use drones, 3D scanning and AR/VR technologies, which make it possible to overlay scanned 3D objects directly onto images of the real world.

The digital twin method is also being used, faithfully transferring buildings or factory halls into the digital environment. In short, digitalisation enables better design, construction and management of buildings throughout their entire life cycle.

Sustainable development and prefabrication

Construction 5.0 means respect and humility towards the world around us. During the upcoming fair, the exhibition will feature, among others, companies focused on reducing CO₂ emissions, energy efficiency, the circular economy, ecological materials, and energy-saving and zero-emission buildings.

The reduced environmental impact of the construction sector is particularly visible in prefabrication and industrialisation. Modularity, automated production lines and intelligent supply chain management help shorten investment delivery times, improve cost efficiency and increase the quality of execution. Prefabrication also highlights the role of timber as an ecological and biodegradable building material.

A human-centred approach

Modern construction places human needs at the centre — in terms of quality of life, the safety of users and workers, workplace ergonomics, accessibility of spaces, and the health and wellbeing of residents. This refers to technologies that support people while remaining non-invasive to the natural environment.

Resilience and safety

In recent years, we have observed a growing importance of building and space functions related to resilience and safety. At BUDMA 2027, key aspects of construction will include crisis resilience, energy security, the adaptation of buildings to climate change, protective construction and critical infrastructure, as well as intelligent monitoring and risk management systems.

Construction 5.0 in practice

How are the principles of Construction 5.0 applied in practice? We can find them in intelligent buildings that manage energy consumption, in autonomous construction machinery, in real-time digital investment management, in integrated infrastructure safety systems, and in the aforementioned modular housing construction.

Construction 5.0 is a response to the challenges currently facing the industry. These include rising energy costs, labour shortages, the need to reduce emissions, urbanisation, infrastructure security and growing user expectations. BUDMA 2027 will create a space designed to address these needs by combining technology, ecology and quality of life.

The BUDMA International Construction and Architecture Fair will take place from 26 to 29 January 2027, together with the STONE Stone Industry Fair, the WinDoor-tech Fair of Machines, Tools and Components, and Progetto Fuoco.
